Here at Knockankelly Farm we keep rare breed Wensleydale Sheep, which have a wonderful lustre fleece that falls almost to the floor in long ringlets. It makes into fabulous soft (and not at all itchy or scratchy) knitting wool, which we have prepared for us for hand knitting. We keep it in it's natural cream colour, rather than having it dyed, to show off the natural lustrous glow. The wool knits as double knitting wool, and if you would like a small sample before you place an order to see and feel just how soft and lustrous it really is, just send us an e-mail.
We have also had some made into throws for soft furnishings, in subtle natural colours, a lovely addition to the home and a fantastic and unusual souvenir of your stay on Arran.
The sheep themselves are quite large and have unusual blue, (dark grey/blue) faces and ears, they are very pretty sheep and very inquisitive and keen to make friends, especially if you have a treat for them.
You can actually meet the sheep responsible for the knitting wool or throw that you take home with you!
You can now purchase both knitting wool and throws direct from us via this website - although do feel free to come and stay with us some time! But in the meantime, we have a paypal account to enable you to purchase whenever you wish and not just during your summer holiday on Arran. However, as we are very small producers and stocks are very limited in each year, please contact us first to make sure we can meet your requirements.
We also have available, photographic prints of not only the animals on our Farm, but also views of Arran - and a coffee table book titled simply "The Isle of Arran" by Penny Hamilton LRPS. But this is another story. Please contact us to find out more about what we have available.
